As a woman raised in New England, I believe I am qualified to say that no part of our country holds a candle to the Northeast during fall.
So, desperate to escape the green tees and hot weather that constitute an early Washington D.C. fall, my roommate and I took a seven-hour drive up to Manchester, Vermont to get the incredible autumn experience New England offers. So, I would like to take a moment to impart on you how to spend a weekend in Manchester, Vermont just in case you are already a New Englander in that area or trying to be one for the weekend (which I really think you should be).
The town of Manchester is nestled within the Green Mountain range, which means wherever you look around town, you will get an incredible view of the colorful range. This makes Equinox Valley Nursery even more special. Here you can peruse fall floral staples like mums and pumpkins enclosed within the mountains. This nursery also as cute little fall accessories like Indian corn.
I know you’re going to be excited to arrive at Equinox, but don’t sprint inside; you might miss its famous Donut House. This cute, little shack offers some of the most delicious apple cider donuts you will ever try. They are small (so you can eat a lot of them without feeling bad about yourself), slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. #heaveninyourmouth. Don’t forget to grab a cup of hot apple cider, too.
There truly is no better way to see the beautiful colors of fall than soaring right above them. The gondola at Stratton Mountain makes this possible. For $12, reserve one of their airy, comfortable gondolas where you can take in the beauty of Vermont autumn from overhead.
Just like one would expect, downtown Manchester looks straight out of Gilmore Girls. This town truly comes to life during the fall by putting up autumnal decorations wherever there is room. However, what you might not have expected is that Manchester boasts a variety of top and middle tier outlets! I’m talkin’ Michael Kors, Kate Spade, GAP, Banana Republic, Talbots and more. Not shabby, Manchester.
If you’re hitting up the shops on Main Street, be sure to pop into All About Vermont for some authentic New England grub and knick-knacks and Zoe’s Deli for one of the freshest, most delicious sandwiches you’ll ever have (they make their bread on sight; you just can’t beat that). If you stop into All About Vermont, you need to try the Maple Pumpkin Butter. It’s life-changing, I tell you.
