So, I thought that Carolina Herrera was, hands down, my favorite line during New York Fashion Week, but my ultimate runway favorite is now…Tommy Hilfiger.
First of all, Hilfiger held his show on a set that resembled a ship. No, not a simple boat, but a powerful ship. How’s that for making a show? Expectedly, Hilfiger’s collection was bound together by a nautical theme that was perfectly elevated through the uses of silk, sequins and textures as fluid as the water through which this manmade ship “sails.”
Another thing we could have predicted was Gigi Hadid starring as the collection’s center piece. Given how she practically ran Hilfiger’s collection last season and her upcoming fashion collaboration with the designer we didn’t expect anything less.
But something we may not have expected was the fabulous, golden dress she closed the show in. Wearing a delicate crown on her head (like every model was), she strutted down the “deck” in a dress made of a material that was purely gold and as fluid as the waters “below.”
All in all, Hilfiger offered up a collection that was simply dazzling. His brilliant use of silk was reminiscent of classic 1950s styles, yet still suitable for modern-day wear.
One of the coolest pieces of his collection and the most iconic were the set of high-waisted bikini bottoms he sent down the runway. If he were sticking to a nautical theme, some kind of bikini bottom is required, right? Thus, Hilfiger successfully debuted a collection that, with only one look, brings the audience to a beautiful port city, while also reminding them that they are observing an iconic fashion veteran’s collection.
