An article that I recently came across on the Man Repeller really got me thinking.
In short, the author was challenging the well-accepted idea that model Gigi Hadid has a good sense of style. Shocking, right? I wasn’t so much shocked at the idea that this popular model doesn’t have the best sense of style, but by the fact someone was actually saying it.
Many a time, I have knotted my brows when glancing at what pieces of clothing the elder Hadid decides to go well together. We’ve all seen this look before, right?
I think Hadid’s fashion pitfalls and peaks become more clear when her outfits are compared to those of her sister’s.
I find Bella’s style to be even more edgy and risk than Gigi’s, although, it seems like she has been toning it down lately–maybe because she is trying to make a very sophisticated entrance into the world of fashion.
But in regard to Gigi, sometimes her risky choices pay off and garner a lot of admiration, while other times, they are complete fashion missteps that leave people like me very confused.
Take her tendency to wear a monochrome color palette; Hadid never fails to pull off an all-black ensemble, like she’s done here. But more notably, she is a huge proponent of the athleisure trend, as she is frequently snapped in cool workout leggings and Stan Smiths. She works that trend impeccably and I think played it huge role in its initial popularity (at least for me she did).
Yet, she’s also faltered in the fashion department when she recently paired grey, cropped and cotton coulettes with grey knee-highs, a grey sweater and a grey coat. Not really sure what she was thinking there…
But ultimately, the way she flaunts her outfits and the fashion risks she takes make her a force to be reckoned with.
Now on to the little Hadid: Bella has always had a very distinct sense of style and for that, I have always admired it. It has always been more palatable on average.
The younger Hadid loves to experiment with clothes, but keeps it within a certain look, unlike Gigi. For a while, her style could easily be described as “edgy” due to her love for Doc Martens, vintage/distressed denim, dark colors and unique textures like leather. For instance, Bella wouldn’t be caught dead wearing grandma’s homemade blanket as a coat.
That being said, while her style is certainly show-stopping, she doesn’t make as many fashion statements as Gigi does–remember what the elder Hadid wore to the American Music Awards?
Instead of pulling a Gigi and wearing the shortest shirt with the most cut-outs, Bella will wear quirky sunglasses or a sheer blouse that shows off a classy bra.
Ultimately, Bella doesn’t seem to try as hard. She just dresses how she wants to dress, lets her style come naturally and in my opinion, that is what makes her the coolest.
